Thinking of giving your pooch a bathe, here are 10 things you should know!

Most dogs would rather raincheck on their bath time. They have their own ideas of self-grooming, rolling on the ground, rubbing their ears, licking their nose and who knows what. Bathing plays a key role to maintain the health of their coat and skin.

You don’t need to bathe your pooch daily unless he had a splash in a mud puddle or is smelling foul. Once in a month regime is enough.

Best to get advice from your Vet if your dog has any skin concerns.

Here are some tips to keep your pooch clean and smelling heavenly

  • First decide on the place! You can plop your pooch in the kitchen sink but for bigger breeds, you would want to consider a portable bathtub or even your backyard.
  • Grab all that you need before you make them wet- A Towel, brush, shampoo conditioner, or even some of your Pets Toys
  • Start with brushing his coat and get rid of any mats, matted hair will retain more water.
  • Make your dog comfortable with water, start with spraying on his back and then move onto his chest. Avoid spraying directly on the face or eyes.
  • Use lukewarm water and wet the coat before applying shampoo.
  • Use shampoos that are specifically designed for dogs as their PH balance is different to humans, dogs are more alkaline.
  • Consider diluting the shampoo in water for easy application.
  • Shampoo the dog twice, the first time around the shampoo will bind with the dirt and help to get rid of it, the second one is to wash the skin and coat and get rid of any excess oil
  • The next important step is using the conditioner. Conditioner rehydrates the skin and closes out all the cells on the outside of the shaft. Apply the conditioner and leave it for a couple of minutes
  • Rinse the whole body until the water runs clear
  • Gently pat dry with a towel, start with headfirst, you may also consider using a hair dryer on a cold setting
  • And yes, don’t forget to reward your Dog, follow up with plenty of praise, treats or play
  • Finally, be a little patient, don’t yell at your pet if resist grooming, you will just make them hate their bathing time
